Search Tips

• Content indexes Articles, Short Notices, Reviews, Letters, Obituaries etc.

• Click on the A to Z tab to browse lists in alphabetical order

• Click on the magnifying glass icon to display results

How to search in Content

To perform a simple search, type the keywords desired in the field Search terms
Examples: Caravaggio exhibitions – Chinese aesthetics – Italian maiolica Urbino, Dutch chiaroscuro paintings – etc.

To select a field click on the dropdown menu In the field

• Everywhere searches in every field (Title, Contributor, Date, Subject, Title of reviewed item and Author of reviewed item)

• Title searches in all the titles of the content of the Burlington Magazine

• Contributors searches for authors and reviewers of all the contents of the Burlington Magazine. To specify authors’ first names search by surname, name form, eg. Fry, Roger

• Date searches in dates of publication, with the format yyyy/mm

• Subject searches in all the keywords of the indexed content of the magazine

• Title of Reviewed Items searches the titles of books and exhibitions reviewed by the Burlington Magazine.

• Authors of Reviewed Items searches the author of books and exhibitions reviewed in the Burlington Magazine (but not their reviewers, which are contained in Contributors)

• Searches in the fields Contributors, Subject, Reviews, Authors of Reviewed Items can be refined by clicking on the drop-down menu Filter by. If a filter is not chosen the search will comprehend all the categories encompassed under Filter by

• Contributor can be refined by Author [of articles, letters, short notices etc.] and Reviewer [of exhibitions and books]

• Subject can be refined by: Artists [with Makers and Firms], Buildings, Collectors, Dates, Museums and Institutions, Patrons, Places, Private galleries, Sources [for sources of art history, eg. Vasari or Ovid] and Works

• A search for Artist can be linked to the Getty ULAN Thesaurus to cover alternative spellings of artists names. For this option: in the field, select Subject, then filter by Artist and tick in the ULAN box under Thesaurus

• Authors of Reviewed Items can be refined by: Author, Compiler, Editor, Introduction by, Institution, Translated by. All these relate directly to the book or exhibition reviewed, not its review in the magazine.

• NB: to search for people with a numeral in their name, eg. Julius II, Nicholas V, Charles I etc. choose Exact Words, Exact order in the menu find

Examples of refined searches in content

Vasari as an artist as opposed to Vasari as a source
Joshua Reynolds as an artist or as a collector
Articles by Julius Schlosser as a contributor or articles reviewing books written by Julius Schlosser

How to proceed:

• To search for all articles that regard Vasari as an artist
  In the field: choose Subjects
  Filter by: select Artists
  Search terms: type Vasari
  

• To search for articles that regard Vasari as a source,
  In Filter by select Sources.

• To search for all articles that regard Joshua Reynolds as a collector
  In the field: choose Subjects
  Filter by: select Collectors
  In word or phrase: type Reynolds
  

• To search for articles that regard Reynolds as an artist,
  In step 3 (Filter by): select Artists.

• To search for all articles that regard Julius Schlosser as a contributor
  In the field: choose Contributors
  In word or phrase: type Schlosser, Julius

• To search for all articles that regard books written by Julius Schlosser
  In the field: choose Authors of Reviewed Items
  In word or phrase: type Schlosser, Julius
  Examples of general keywords to use when searching are: iconography, attributions, documents, dating, provenance, patronage, social history, critical reception, techniques, formal analysis, technical analysis, aesthetics, art theory, sources, artists’ writing, conservation.
  Partial word search
  Enter your term followed by an asterisk (*). For example, entering ‘Archit*' would return results for all records containing words beginning with ‘Archit', such as ‘Architect', 'Architects', ‘Architecture' and ‘Architectural'.
